ADT, Europe’s leading provider of electronic fire and security solutions and GEKA BRUSH, a leading manufacturer of cosmetic brushes and applicators have worked in partnership to develop a unique source tagging solution for the protection of small cosmetic products, which, alongside electrical goods and spirits, are amongst the most attractive products to shoplifters.
At the heart of the solution is ADT’s Sensormatic® Ultra•Strip® III Low Profile electronic article surveillance (EAS) label, measuring 44.6 mm x 10.16 mm x 1.2 mm. The size and design of the label means that it is particularly suitable for incorporating into the packaging of small products.
The Ultra•Strip® labels utilise Ultra•Max® acousto-magnetic (AM) technology, which offers the highest levels of detection on the market. The Ultra•Max® AM technology also allows for the labels to be used in a broad range of applications - they will work reliably in the vicinity of metals and liquids, are suitable for virtually all shapes and sizes of products and can also be used with shop entrances and exits that are over two metres wide.
Source tagging - the application of EAS labels into or onto merchandise during the manufacturing or packaging process - offers retailers the benefit of potentially reduced labour costs as the labels do not need to be applied on the shop floor. Furthermore, because the labels are incorporated into the cosmetics packaging, they are concealed from view and do not interfere with the display and promotion of items such as mascara, eyeliner or lip gloss.
Just three months after the start of the project, GEKA BRUSH submitted its first prototypes of the EAS-protected cosmetic packaging and filed for a patent application. ADT presented the first operational samples at the SECURITY 2006 event in Essen late last year.
Paul Sztipanovics, Source Tagging Team Leader at ADT and member of ADT’s Global Source Tagging Team, says: “This jointly developed solution with GEKA BRUSH demonstrates the variety and flexibility of potential applications of ADT’s AM EAS solutions. We believe this solution to be a world first for small cosmetic products and ultimately it is the customer that will benefit.”
Through the ADT Global Source Tagging Network a number of test centres, source tagging engineers and specialists worldwide help to develop solutions like the one developed in cooperation with GEKA BRUSH as well as other solutions for retail and industry to protect articles from shoplifting.
Karl Hartstock, Innovations Manager at GEKA BRUSH, added: “The partnership has enabled us to use ADT’s expertise in the field of EAS and together we have been able to take a huge step forward in the area of source tagging. It means that we can offer our customers innovative products that combine highly efficient security technology with elegant design.”
ADT offers a complete suite of electronic security and operational tools for retailers around the world and serves 9 of the top 10 global retailers.
