From 30th April to 5th May 2007, Helen Emery-Scott, HR Coordinator (GEKA UK), will be trekking the Great Wall of China to raise funds for Breast Cancer Campaign. An already avid fundraiser, Helen’s Mum was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in the summer of 2005. Helen had already completed various challenges including the Blaydon Race and the Race for Life supporting Cancer Research and Breast cancer Campaign, and the diagnosis of cancer in the family spurred Helen on to consider challenges further afield.
The trek will involve on average ten miles of hiking each day, and Helen will take part in a training programme over the next six months to get her fitness levels up.
Breast Cancer Campaign ask that each entrant raise a minimum of £2500 sponsorship money, and Helen has a few tricks up her sleeve to help her to reach that target.
The first fundraising event took place in August this year, and was a treasure hunt in the village of Lanchester. The event was a huge success, with prizes donated from local companies and a picnic supplied by ASDA in Stanley. £131 was raised from this event, which included a raffle and a ‘Guess the name of the parrot’ competition.
The next event to take place will be an indoor car boot sale, details to be confirmed.
Most exciting is the event planned in March 2007, a black tie ball at Lumley Castle. The ball will take place on Saturday 10th March, and the evening will kick off with a ‘Come Dancing’ style dance display, and a set from the renowned band ‘The Gents’. A splendid buffet will be served, while local DJ ‘LoonyChoons’ takes to the decks with disco classics.
‘The Gents’ will then perform their second set of the evening, and the disco will take over until the small hours. A professional photographer will attend the event to take portrait photographs of everyone in their finery, which will be available to purchase, with a percentage going to the sponsorship fund.
Tickets to the event are priced at £30 each, and are available from Helen. The ticket includes all of the above, as well as entry into a grand prize draw and a goody bag in which you can carry your prize home!
