Company Profile - GEKA Manufacturing Limited
Based in Tanfield, GEKA Manufacturing Limited specialises in the manufacture of application systems and plastic packaging for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and technical industries. Since its establishment in 1925, the company has greatly expanded its operations, diversifying into plastics processing, moulding, assembly and decorating. The company now produces complete packaging and application systems for some of the most prestigious cosmetics houses around the world.
The Challenge
GEKA had already trained several of its workforce in performing manufacturing operations and wanted the remainder to be given the same opportunity. From previous experience the company knew that there were significant benefits in focussing the shop floor staff on lean production techniques. However, like most companies operating in a highly competitive manufacturing environment, GEKA could not afford to release staff from the production line for any length of time or fund the training.
The Solution
Working with Derwentside College's Business Development Unit, the company accessed funding for their training through Train to Gain, a new government initiative that assists employers to train their staff and enables them to achieve a first level two qualification. Once funding had been secured, Derwentside College's engineering team organised an assessment programme designed to minimise disruption to the production schedule. This involved College tutors working extremely flexibly to assess a variety of different shifts, including group assessment.
The Results
Trevor Siddoway, HR Executive said, "In the manufacturing industry, anything that helps to increase productivity through the development of our people is a bonus. Through the training offered by Derwentside College, our staff now have a greater awareness of the impact their actions can have on productivity. We hope that this will significantly improve the effectiveness of the business."
