Helping improve employees’ skills

A MANUFACTURER is helping to improve its staff's maths and English skills as a means to boost the company's productivity.

Geka Manufacturing, of Tanfield Lea, County Durham, employs 145 people to produce application systems and plastics packaging for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and technical industries.

To help sustain its performance, 92 of its employees have been enrolled in the Better Workforce Challenge, run by the Learning and Skills Council North-East, which aims to improve skills in a variety of areas.

So far, 70 people have gained level one or two adult certificates in maths and English after taking courses run by Business Solutions, at City of Sunderland College.

Commercial manager Trevor Siddoway, said: "We have seen the confidence and aspirations of the workforce rise, better report writing and timesheet completion, improved communication and more employee development and progression."
